healthified ballpark eats

Its no secret that I’m a huge Yankees fan. The baseball post season is one of my favourite times of the year!

Tonight I thought I’d bring some of my favourite ball park treats home and give them a healthy makeover.

Nothing tastes better at the ball park then a chilli dog and ice cream. I’m not a beer drinker, but the husband tells me that tastes good too… ;)

The typical chilli dog averages about 400-500 calories.

ChiliDog

There are so many ways to make this sinful snack healthier.

Step one: THE CHILLI

The secret to keeping chilli on the healthy side is to use lean meat and jam it full of veggies. Into the slow cooker went: 1 lb extra lean ground beef, onion, garlic, celery, red and green peppers, frozen corn, mushrooms, zucchini, 2 cans of diced tomatoes, one can mixed beans, one can of kidney beans and a handful of spices.

Step two: THE DOG

For the chilli dog itself I used Schneider's low fat hotdogs that have just 35 calories each. Instead of the traditional white bun, I used a whole wheat bun (just 120 cals) made by Betty. Top it with a little light old cheddar, and you have yourself a pretty tasty and LIGHT chilli dog.

Step three: THE SIDES

Who needs french fries when you have have some delicious roasted veggies? I thinly sliced a sweet potato, tossed it in some EVOO, S&P, paprika, and a dash of cinnamon. Roasted them in a 400 degree oven for about 30 mins.

I had some asparagus in the fridge that was nearing its last life, so I chopped it and tossed it in some Kraft Fig Balsamic dressing and roasted it for about 15 mins.

All together.

Step 4: DESSERT

I always enjoy ending my meal with a little something sweet. This is a delicious, yet calorie friendly alternative to a traditional sundae.

1/2 cup vanilla frozen yogurt, 1 chopped Reese Peanut Butter Cup, drizzle chocolate sauce. PERFECTION.

Big game #3 tonight… NYY at Philly. Lets hope for a speedy game. All these late night games are interfering with my beauty sleep.

Let’s go YANKEES!

Looks SOOO good and satisfying! I haven't had a chili dog in eons!

Great job on the healthifying! Seriously, why eat the other crap when you can enjoy it just the same with a clear conscience (and arteries)?

Hebrew National also makes ridiculously delicious low-cal hot dogs- and the fact that they're kosher lets me pretend that the ingredients are less scary!
