I read Caitlin’s post yesterday, and it really hit home for me.
Both of our kitties are from the shelter.
Jersey isn’t from the actual shelter, but we adopted her from a family that no longer wanted her. She apparently chewed dry wall, ruined their hardwood, and jumped all over everyone. Of course she did… she was a PUPPY. Part of me wonders what the whole story is though, because she is a very timid dog. She also suffers from a little bit of separation anxiety too.
Flaws and all, I love that dog to bits. There’s not a day that goes by that she doesn’t warm my heart with her quirkiness and loving personality.
Their loss, was truly my gain.
If you’re looking for a dog/cat, please check your local shelter or classifieds for animals that are looking for loving homes. They deserve a second chance too. :)

We got our dog from a shelter. BEST.DOG.EVER. We love him and couldn't imagine our lives without him!
Great post Amy - any type/breed of animal you are looking for are at shelters and looking for great homes! We got our first dog Max the same way you got Jersey - when we found him he had been left outside for 24hrs in January - they "forgot to let him in" so we went and brought him in to our place at the time and 5 years later he's living the high life! Our second dog Maggie was from a worse situation and a year later she's a spoiled princess now - animals need our help! Save yourselves hundreds of dollars and give a home to an animal who desperately needs it.

Fantastic post!
Rescuing an animal is one of the most rewarding things a person can do, I think.
The pictures of your pets are gorgeous, by the way.
I totally agree with you!! Shelter dogs are the best. I had a great dog growing up named Kasey that came from a shelter and she was so loving and never hurt a flea. We never knew her back story but she loved everyone.
Currently we can't have dogs in our apartment but I got my last cat from a shelter and as much of an ahole he can be at times I love him.
Great post!! I'm a total animal rescue advocate!! My 3 cats are rescues and my one dog is from the humane society, the other from a provincial animal rescue in my area. I totally feel like it is my gain to have them!!!
Rescues/shelter dogs/cats ROCK!!
Your fur babies are so cute!
This is a fantastic post Amy.
Neither of my cats are shelter cats which makes me sad.
Charlie is a rescue dog, and though we got him when he was a puppy, I believe that if the wrong family had chosen him, he would be back there right now. He definitely has his faults, but I love him for them.
I think both you AND Jersey won out on the deal. You and Mr. B are amazing fur parents!
My current dog is not from a shelter but I will be getting a dog from a shelter the next time I adopt. We got her at a pet store (yes, I know) and she is really the one who adopted us. I told someone once that I felt bad that we hadn't connected with a shelter dog before we adopted Shadow and had adopted her elsewhere, and they told me "it's ok, you saved her anyway" which I thought was sweet.
We found both of our kitties on craigslist. Eric had been passed along from person to person, even though he was adorable and only 8 months old! When we first got him, he had a weird habit of climbing into the fridge! One of the people who had him didn't have air conditioning so he had taken to their fridge as a way to stay cool. Eric is a hilarious, lovely cat who makes me laugh (especially when he meows because he doesn't do it often and he sorta sounds like a duck)
Iris' family needed to get rid of her because the wife was allergic and she had long hair. They had confined her to one room and realized it was no way for an animal to live. She is the most loving cat ever! She's incredibly sucky and always wants to be near me.
I love both of our animals and am so happy we were able to adopt them.
Lucy and Chandler are both from the shelter. I love them with all my heart!!! I've had dogs and cats my entire life and not ONE of them was a pure bread and they all came from places where they neeeded to find families. They have contributed to soooo much of my life growing up and even now.
Jersey is one super duper lucky girl to have had you guys come along ;-)
I believe that shelter dogs or dogs that are unwanted by previous owners, are so grateful for us saving them. They are the best animals in the world.
It's like they can feel that we helped them get a second chance at life.
