You Never Know Who’s Listening

Let this post be a little lesson in change room chit chat. You never know who’s listening!

A little background info: My gym is kind of like a cult. I choose to be a non-participating member of said cult, but I am a fantastic at people watching/eaves dropping. I ‘m aware of all the inner cliques, all the “disorder waiting to happen” girls, who’s on what diet, etc etc etc.

Last night I was in the change room getting ready for spin. I overheard a conversation that made be absolutely furious. I’m not getting into the nitty gritty details, because it would be far too confusing to explain the who’s who of the conversation. There were some catty comments pertaining to their “poor” half marathon performance on the weekend claiming they “could have easily broke 2h” if they hadn’t been running slow with a friend. (this friend happens to be one of MY friends) In fact, they were so fast that they would run ahead and then circle back to let their friend catch up.

Looking back, I really wish I would have piped up and said something, but alas I didn’t. What is the point of this post? I think too often we get so focussed on numbers. I know I am always freaking out at the numbers on the scale, my race times, the number in my bank account. Cut yourself a little slack now and then! Who cares how fast you run, you freakin’ ran 21.1k!

Who cares how much you weigh? You’re healthy! Who cares about how much is in the bank, you have money!

Another thing: To the bitches in the change room... I don’t care if you run 5k in 18 mins, or if you’re a super duper spin instructor, I’d like to see you run a sub 2h half marathon. Stop trying to make yourselves look better.

Hear hear! It's all about perspective, and I need to step back more often and reflect because it doesn't come easily. Nice blog, and way to run that HM!

Some friend, your friend has there. It think it all depends on that person's tone of voice. A cocky tone talking about stuff like that is such a piss off. At least if the person was being sensitive this would be a whole other matter.

Great post Amy.

Running a half marathon in ANY amount of time is such an amazing accomplishment.

Losing weight, no matter the number is also a fabulous accomplishment.

It is so easy to get caught up in the numbers and the "facts" rather than enjoy the experience or the moment or the emotion.

I agree, awesome post. Good reminder to us all - I was just talking to a friend about how we always want more, never really satisfied with what we have or with what we are doing, we have to sit back and reflect more often as to what we DO have!

Amen to that!

Amen sister! That's my kinda perspective! Stuff like that all boils down to lack of confidence. We use numbers to guage everything, like we need that solid tangible number to validate us regardless of what it is. I can't stand to listen to people go on about their running times like it's the latest berkin bag. Who are you trying to impress with the number? Run because you love it and compete with yourself if you want to, but blabbing excuses about your time and especially at someone else's expense just shows how much YOU suck, not the other person. (You being the bitches at the gym and not "you" you :-D)

Great post! Honestly, this is the best place to vent. It's just safer I guess.
As for these girls, they will get their bad karma back. What you put out in the world is what you will get back. How awful of them, they are no better than anyone else.

Amen.

I can only run 1.5 miles, not even sure how many kms that is, but it takes me 20 minutes straight.

Do I care that the person next to me can run it in 5?

No I do not.

People are different. That's the beauty of this world we live in.

Hey Amy I'm Pheebs and I just started blogging. Anyway I just wanted to say thank you for saying that. I go to a similarly snobby gym, and all I ever hear is how so and so gained weight or slowed them down on a jog and so on. They talk more about other people's exercise or lack thereof more than they actually exercise. Anyways, I just wanted to say it helps to know I'm not the only one sick of these exercise snobs.
