I once again fell victim to the heat. It was about 24 degrees, which dosn't sound TOO bad... but the fact that there wasn't a cloud in the sky really didn't help much.
I finished in 2h39 mins which is actually my worst half time ever. But with that said, being the competitive type that I am I looked up a lot of my training buddies times and everyone was slower then usual today. I know I said I had no goal, but lets be honest. I'm human!
First 10k was pretty awesome. I was lightening fast (as per usual - I ALWAYS start out too fast!) and the energy was high. My amazing husband was there at the half way point, and ran/took pictures for about a kilometre with Tanya and I.
It was after this that the shade ended, and the run became very mentally challenging. This is where I do all my training runs and unfortunately I know the route like the back of my hand. This is beneficial when you're having a great run, but when you'll feeling like ass... its not so good to know EXACTLY how many k's you have left. Lesson learned: I don't think I'll do another long distance race in downtown Ottawa.
At 19k, I was cooked. My 10:1's went out the window, and I told myself I'd run to each km marker sign and then take a walk break. It worked. The last km, I was able to push it mentally AND physically and I even sprinted for the last 300m.
You know, I've been all negative about this. But you know... 5 years ago I weighed 263lbs, and couldn't even walk up a flight of stairs. I need to focus on the positive, not the negative! I rock!
Oh, and I should note... Jeff, I thought of you today. There were a kazillion TNT runners out today! And let me tell you, do they ever have spirit!
Also to be noted: I'm wearing my medal all day. Here are some pics: enjoy!
My buddy Tanya and I mocking John Stanton
The starting line... 9000 runners!
Half way point; where the route goes from Quebec to Ontario!
Shot of my ass... And thats where the battery in the camera died. I'll have pics from the finish line from sports stats. Thats the story of my half marathon. It was a slice! :)

You rocked! Remember, we are our own worst critic!
Congratulations on pushing through the mental battle!
The point is you COMPLETED IT!!! You look fantastic Amy and should be so proud of yourself!!!!!
BTW, pink is a great color on you :)
Congratulations on the Half, Amy!
I got cooked yesterday too, and was seriously glad that the second half of the 5K was all in the shade!
You impress me so much, Amy. I kept checking back for your report and I think you did terrific. It's one thing to finish when you feel great, but is really hard to keep going when you're having a tough day.
But you did it!!! Hope you're going to go celebrate!
Congrats!
That's so cute of your hubby to run for a bit with you!
Amy - You're amazing! GReat Job!
I'm a proud girl right now!!
Congrats Amy!! You rocked it (no matter what you say!!). I'll never have the stamina for those runs, so I admire you for pulling it off.
Well you did it! We did it! The Sun (insert expletive) killed me, my lungs and allergies... god it was awful.
I started having issues at the 5 mile mark.
This wasn't the worst time but it was bar none the hardest.
Congrats!! You should be very proud of your race. At least you finished it and you look great doing it!
Amy, give yourself a HUGE pat on the back...that is an awesome time...way to go!!!!
and to think of all you've accomplished in 5 years...Kudos to YOU!
We have not had hot weather in Ottawa since last summer....so good job!
Congrats!
p.s.
please stay in touch!
I am so proud of you! As time passes, you won't remember the frustration, only the fact that you made it.
Wear your medal, girl! You earned it!
Goodness you are gorgeus. It was SO hot in Ottawa today, I thought of you often. Gosh darnit, who cares the time (which really, isn't bad for 21 FREAKING KILOMETERS) - you kicked arse. You ran it. That's 21 more km than probably 99.9i% of the world did! You rock.
WTG! running in the heat is super hard and running that distance, incredible!
"5 years ago I weighed 263lbs, and couldn't even walk up a flight of stairs." Every day you talk about how awesome your runs are -- you have come so very far. That's what it's all about, right?
Thanks for the note on TNT -- yes, they are some awesome folks.
Oh, and about not caring about your time -- that's total BS -- if you didn't care, you'd just be jogging. Be human, would ya!
Great job Amy!
oh whatever woman!
So many people look up to you and you accomplished what so many only dream of.
Truly a rockstar.
Now come run a half down in TO with me :)
You rocked! Congrats!
All I can see is the fact that you ran for 2h39 mins! WOW GIRL!!!!!!!!!!
You wouldn't be you if you didn't want to do better, right?? That's why you were able to actually run a half in the first place!
BIG WHOPPIN' KUDDOS girlfriend. WOW, simply amazing!!!
wow wow wow!! I'm so proud of you for meeting this awesome goal. Just think a PR is definitely in your future then!!
Heat has the same effect on me - totally sucks!
Better to cross the line happy and loving life, then to not cross it at all!! Good race adjustments girl!!
Wow, you rock even if it was hot!
